Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá is the patron saint and queen of Colombia, of the city of Maracaibo and the state of Zulia in Venezuela, and of the city of Caraz, in the Department of Ancash, Peru. Tradition tells us that among the first conquerors of the New Kingdom of Granada, Antonio de Santana, encomendero of the towns of Suta and Chiquinquirá, was especially devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary. For this reason, he built his dormitory and small chapel in the town of Suta. Wishing to place an image of the Mother of God there, he commissioned an image of Our Lady of the Rosary to be painted on a cotton blanket. The blanket was wider than it was long, and so that the spaces on either side of the Mother of God wouldn't be left blank, he commissioned Saint Andrew the Apostle and Saint Anthony of Padua to be painted on each side. After receiving the image, he placed the canvas on a wooden frame and displayed it on the altar of the chapel.
