¿QUÉ ES EL DERRAME PLEURAL? ¿POR QUÉ SE PRODUCE? CAUSAS, SÍNTOMAS, DIAGNÓSTICO Y TRATAMIENTO

📌 What is pleural effusion? In this video, I explain EVERYTHING about this medical condition that occurs when fluid accumulates in the pleural space, that is, between the layers of the pleura that cover the lungs. This abnormal accumulation can affect breathing and be a sign of underlying diseases such as pneumonia, heart failure, tuberculosis, or even lung cancer. 🔬 Causes of pleural effusion Pleural effusion can be caused by multiple medical conditions, including: ✔ Transudative pleural effusion: This is due to problems such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or nephrotic syndrome. ✔ Exudative pleural effusion: This is associated with infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis), autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), and lung cancer or pleural metastasis. Pleural Effusion Symptoms Signs may vary depending on the amount of fluid buildup and the underlying cause, but the most common are: ✅ Shortness of breath (dyspnea), especially when lying down. ✅ Chest pain that may worsen with deep breathing. ✅ Persistent cough with no apparent cause. ✅ Fever and chills if there is an associated infection. 📊 Diagnosis of Pleural Effusion To detect and evaluate this condition, doctors use various tests, such as: 🔹 Chest X-ray: This allows you to see fluid buildup in the lungs. 🔹 Chest ultrasound: This helps locate the fluid more precisely. 🔹 Computed tomography (CT) scan: This provides detailed images of the pleura and possible underlying causes. 🔹 Thoracentesis: A procedure in which pleural fluid is removed with a needle for analysis and to determine the cause of the effusion. ⚕ Treatment of pleural effusion Management of pleural effusion depends on the cause: ✔ Pleural drainage through thoracentesis or placement of a drainage tube if the fluid is abundant. ✔ Treatment of the underlying disease, such as antibiotics for infections, diuretics for heart failure, or chemotherapy if there is a tumor. ✔ Pleurodesis, a procedure that seals the pleura to prevent fluid from accumulating again in recurrent cases. 🎥 Don't miss this video!
