A Cambodian-based fraud organization is targeting young people who travel to Cambodia on a whim and become complicit in their fraudulent activities, not only in Japan but also in South Korea. The father of a South Korean university student whose life was taken by this organization reveals his heartbreaking story. Last July, a ransom demand call came to the family of Kim (pseudonym, 22), a South Korean university student. Kim's brother: "67 million won by August 5th? 57 million won? Where are we supposed to get that kind of money?" Kim: "They said they'd send me to Myanmar to work if I didn't pay them back." Fraud organization: "Why don't you just pay us back? Then you can take your brother back with you." Approximately two weeks later, Kim's body was found in Cambodia. The men indicted for Kim's murder were Chinese men believed to be members of a Cambodian-based fraud organization. What happened to Kim? His father spoke to JNN in an interview. Father who lost his son in Cambodia "He originally said he was going to Germany for a school training program, but later I found out he went to Cambodia." It appears Mr. Kim lied to his father and traveled to Cambodia with an acquaintance to sell his bank account. What awaited him was a criminal organization involved in special fraud. Mr. Kim suddenly began demanding large sums of money from his father, and then… Father who lost his son in Cambodia "I received a call from the organization my son was involved with. They kept pressuring me for 57 million won (approximately 6.3 million yen)." The organization demanded money from Mr. Kim's family, claiming it was to fill the void left by a fugitive. Fraudulent Organization "If you return the money, we won't say anything." Sounds of violence could be heard on the other end of the phone… Fraudulent Organization "I don't know this guy. Hang up." Father who lost his son in Cambodia "I could hear sounds of insults and beatings coming from the side." Furthermore, drugs were forced upon him within their base. Fraudulent Organization "Suck it before I kill you, quickly, harder." Later, the Cambodian government sent the family documents for cremation. Such incidents are rapidly increasing throughout East Asia. In South Korea, the number of abduction and imprisonment cases in Cambodia exceeded 300 last year, and in Japan, several young people have been confirmed to have lost contact after traveling there. Fraudulent organizations are believed to be recruiting young people by promising high incomes, then imprisoning them. They are controlled through violence and drugs, and forced to act as scammers. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, taking the situation very seriously, stated: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung: "We must protect the victims and swiftly repatriate those involved in the incident to our country." A specialized team has been established on the ground, and in cooperation with Cambodian authorities, efforts to crack down on bases and rescue operations are continuing.
