Kote Marjanishvili Street 4K walk, Tbilisi, Saqartvelo (Georgia)
Exploring the left bank and Chugureti area, and today we are on Marjanishvili Street (კოტე მარჯანიშვილის ქუჩა). It's a street in the Chugureti district. It begins at the Galaktioni Tabidze Bridge and ends at the railway tracks of the Georgian Railway. In the early 19th century, a German colony called Alexanderdorf (named after the reigning Russian monarch Alexander I) was established in the surrounding area. The colonists built a Church of Peter and Paul (located on the site of present-day Marjanishvili Square, demolished in the 1940s), which is why the street came to be known as Kirochnaya. The street's current name was given in honour of the great Georgian theatre director Konstantin Marjanishvili. We start at the Tabidze bridge (former Vere bridge), The area began to develop intensively after the construction of the Vere Bridge, that was built in 1845, and all the street system here is preserved since 1880s. Since that time this area was connected to the city and colonists lost its privilege. We begin at the Tabidze Bridge, opposite which stood the Tiflis Summer Club — not to be confused with the Artists' Club. This was a club for wealthy people, modelled on English clubs, where members played cards and conducted business. To this end, the club's founders leased a riverside plot for 12 years. The club operated on the basis of membership fees. In 1912, this plot was purchased from Ratinova. In 1939, the House of Books was built here, designed by Baratashvili and Mikaelyan. Marjanishvili, 4 - here stood Bilfield's house, that was demolished after the war, and in its place a building was constructed where Tabidze received an apartment. Marjanishvili, 6 - The house of Yevfrosinya Martinovskaya was built to a design by architect Antonov in 1901. Her father was the head of the Educational Administration of the Transcaucasus. Marjanishvili, 8 - In 1907, construction began on the street of a cultural and educational centre — the People's House — designed by Stefan Krichinsky, who had won the competition. The idea was borrowed from Scandinavia: it was a society for spreading literacy among adults from the lower classes who had had no opportunity to receive an education. The funds for construction were provided by the heirs of the major Baku entrepreneur and oil magnate Zubalashvili. Construction was supervised by Melik-Gilyarov and Ogadjanov, while the finishing work was carried out by the firm of Anton Novak. All equipment was purchased abroad. The opening took place on 24 March 1909. In 1924, the Marjanishvili Theatre was moved into the building — and the muses depicted on the building are, interestingly, both Greek and Caucasian. At 7 Marjanishvili Street stood the former Caucasian Military Officers' Economic Society, built in 1913 to a design by Rogoiskiy — now TBC Bank. Denisenko and Savich-Richkovsky completed the construction after Rogoiskiy died in 1912. At the corner of Mikhailovskiy Avenue and Kirochnaya Street, four identical buildings were planned. Three of them were built in 1947–48 to a design by architect Melia, and in the early 1950s the Tbilgorproekt building was added — the lower one, where the metro station is located. Then Stalin died, and the chief architect of Tbilisi, Mzhavanidze, closed the project. Two of the residential buildings were intended for figures of culture (on the left — there is a Vakhtang Chabukiani museum there) and for engineers (on the right, if looking uphill). In 2012 a restoration was carried out, and all the decorative elements date from that time. In 1864, the Russian Church of Alexander Nevsky was erected at the corner of the street (current address — 69 Javakhishvili Street). It was one of the 1st churches built in russian style by Simenson project. Enjoy the walk, please like, subscribe, comment - that means a lot to me! 🩵 Like my videos?
