In this video, we discuss building the wisdom of Compassionate Self in Compassion-Focused Therapy: a stance capable of understanding the nature of the human mind, recognizing our fears, protective strategies, and vulnerabilities without automatically responding with criticism, shame, or attack. Part of this wisdom involves understanding how our brain works—a brain shaped by evolution to detect threats, seek protection, and belonging. A brain we didn't choose to have, but one we need to learn to manage. We also explore: the impact of attachment relationships on the construction of our emotional experience; how competition and self-criticism can organize our lives; why developing compassion requires courage, discernment, and responsibility—not passivity. In CFT, Compassionate Self is not a "zen state" nor an attempt to eliminate difficult emotions.
