Frozen Coastal Walk Around Scarlett Point | Isle of Man Winter Walk

A near two-hour circular walk around Scarlett Point on a frozen winter’s day on the Isle of Man. I start in Castletown, even popping into Tesco to pick up a hot chocolate — although, as it turns out, I never quite find the right place to stop and drink it. The day after snow and hail, much of the island is frozen over, schools are closed and at the start of the walk the buses aren’t running at all. The route itself is more icy than snowy, with long quiet stretches and wide coastal views, broken by sudden hail showers blowing in from the sea. At one point I’m caught out by a passing shower and have to decide whether to swap cameras, before simply waiting it out and carrying on once it clears. Along the way I meet a few fellow walkers — including a conversation with three ladies, one of whom had recently seen one of my Facebook reels — a reminder of how small and connected the island can feel, even on a quiet winter day. As the walk moves further out, the paths empty and it becomes a slower, more meditative journey. There are moments of reflection woven through the walk, including a wrong turn that becomes a reminder that we all sometimes lose our way — but there’s always a path back.
