The mound, or rather a spoil heap, was formed by material excavated during the excavation of the shaft and galleries. It was decided to retain it and use it as a ventilation shaft for the adit. Using a method long used by miners, its lining was extended to the upper surface of the heap to prevent water from the surrounding fields from flowing into it during heavy rains or meltwater, which could damage the stone walls and cause the shaft to collapse. It is protected from the top by a concrete slab with a steel grid. Bats have been found living in it, and its importance to the adit's ventilation system is underscored by the fact that the surrounding heap area was once fenced.
