Residents in Japan’s Ishigaki stock up as Typhoon Bavi nears | ABS-CBN News

Heavy rain pelted Japan’s southern island of Ishigaki on Friday (July 10) morning as residents committed to some last-minute grocery shopping in preparation for the approaching Typhoon Bavi. Bavi is expected to make landfall in Ishigaki on early Saturday (July 11) morning, according to Japan’s meteorological authorities. Early on Friday it was nearing Japan's Sakishima Islands — a remote chain of islands near Taiwan — with maximum sustained winds of 162 kph (100 mph). At a local supermarket, dozens of residents braved heavy rain to stock up ahead of what some referred to as a “worrying” typhoon. Local resident Eiken Ishigaki filled his shopping basket full of snacks and beer, anticipating that he’ll be stuck at home on Friday night and Saturday. “Well, if there’s a power outage, and the electricity goes out, the refrigerator will stop working too, so that's what I'm worried about,” said Ishigaki. At a local ferry terminal, all ferries for Friday and Saturday appeared to have been cancelled due to the typhoon. Kazuo Akaishi, a tourist from Japan’s largest island, Honshu, had hoped to catch a ferry to a nearby island, but has instead been forced to extend his stay in Ishigaki. “I’ve never experienced a direct hit like this. I've been here when typhoons passed nearby, but nothing this severe,” said Akaishi, who has visited Ishigaki on previous occasions. Authorities have warned residents to remain on high alert on Friday and Saturday for violent winds, landslides, flooding and storm surges.
