Bringing BIM into GIS with OGC I3S and OGC 3D Tiles - 19 June 2026

This is a short talk (25 minutes) covering standards for bringing Building Information Modeling spatial data, typically 2D and 3D design and construction information, into GIS using open standards including IFC, OGC Indexed 3D Scene Layers (I3S) and OGC 3D Tiles. The talk was delivered as part of a EuroSDR 3D Geoinformation Webinar on creating and using 3D geoinformation as part of a SiG: https://www.eurosdr.net/research/proj... The intent of the talk is to communicate high level concepts for integrating BIM with geospatial experiences. I do not cover a deep dive on the technical integration and conversion pathways. For more information: Building Scene Layers discussed in Esri documentation: https://doc.esri.com/en/arcgis-pro/la... Tiling BIM into 3D Tiles in Cesium/Bentley documentation: https://cesium.com/learn/3d-tiling/io... As both standards are open and royalty-free, anyone can create a converter or reader to work with geospatially positioned BIM data in formats that can be used in geospatial experiences.
