Beginner Wet Shaving — Everything You Need & How to Use It
Episode 2 of my beginner wet shaving series. Last video I told you why I made the switch from cartridges. This one is the practical bit — exactly what you need to get started and how to actually use a double edge safety razor properly. I'll keep it straightforward. No unnecessary kit, no expensive rabbit holes. Just the essentials that will get you a genuinely great shave from day one. I'm using the Henson AL13 safety razor with an RK blade, Proraso Red shaving soap, an alum bar, Thayers witch hazel tonic, Proraso Red balm and Brut splash. Everything I mention is what I actually bought and use myself — nothing sponsored, nothing gifted. If you watched episode 1 this is the natural next step. If you're landing here fresh, start with episode 1 first — link in the description below. The starter kit you actually need: Razor — a quality double edge safety razor. I use the Henson AL13. Blades — RK blades. Start with a sampler pack before committing to one blade. Soap or cream — Proraso Red. Excellent lather, incredible scent, very beginner friendly. Brush — a basic synthetic brush works perfectly to start. Alum bar — runs over your face post-shave. Closes nicks, tightens pores, tells you where your technique needs work. Aftershave tonic — Thayers witch hazel. Calms the skin without stripping it. Balm — Proraso Red balm. Moisture and protection after the tonic. Splash — Brut. Classic finish. That is it. You do not need anything else to start. How to shave — the basics: Prep your face with warm water first. Load your brush from the soap tub using circular motions for 30 seconds. Build your lather on your face, not in a bowl — circular motion, let it bloom. Shave with the grain on your first pass. No pressure — let the weight of the razor do the work. The Henson AL13 is particularly forgiving on this because the blade gap is tight and controlled. Rinse, check, and do a second pass across the grain if you want a closer finish. Cold water rinse. Alum bar wet and run over the face. Leave it 30 seconds then rinse. Thayers on a cotton pad. Balm. Splash. Done.
