Shiretoko, Hokkaido, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2005. This time, we visited the sea off the coast of Rausu Town, in central Shiretoko. What we saw there was a massive flock of short-tailed shearwaters that looked like a pitch-black vortex. And with the help of local photographer Takashi Kawabata, we finally encountered a giant 18-meter sperm whale! We'll show you this breathtaking natural sight. *Whale trivia: Whales often blow water, but they don't actually spray it out like a fountain. This is how they breathe while swimming, and the breath comes out of their blowholes. They blow out so forcefully that it sprays the surrounding water with it. Rausu photographer/cameraman Takashi Kawabata passed away in April 2025. The footage shot by Kawabata and used in this film is made available to the public thanks to the generosity of his family.
