México: La Bestia, el tren de los migrantes (2018) | ARTE.tv Documentales
Every year, some 400,000 migrants cross Mexico 🇲🇽 in an attempt to reach the north of the country and illegally cross the border that separates them from their final destination, the US 🇺🇸. It's a 2,500-kilometer journey. The fastest way to reach the border is to clandestinely board a freight train 🚆 that runs from south to north of the country. Migrants nicknamed it "La Bestia" (The Beast). A report from 2018. It's a situation that repeats itself every year; tens of thousands of would-be exiles climb aboard #LaBestia. And every year, many are seriously injured or lose their lives. With the slightest lapse in attention, there's the possibility of a fall and the risk of being trapped on the tracks. The number of disabled and dead is very high. But this isn't their only hardship. In "La Bestia" (The Beast), migrants are not exempt from the violence of drug cartels, who seek to recruit them by force or kidnap them to demand ransom from their families. Those who resist, those who cannot pay, are often executed. It is impossible to know the exact number of migrants murdered by drug traffickers; their bodies are thrown into the hundreds of mass graves hidden throughout Mexico. For several weeks, this documentary follows the journey of Chele, Zompopo, Conejo, Profeta, Monkey, and Picho, a group of six citizens from Honduras, on their odyssey from Palenque in southern Mexico to the Chihuahuan Desert, which runs along the border with the United States. The desert will be their last high-risk challenge before setting foot on American soil.
