🐦 Nærbø Bird Park - A Small Green Oasis
The Nærbø Bird Park is often described as a beautiful little oasis right in the center of Nærbø. Even though it’s small, the park has a unique charm that makes it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. As soon as you step inside, the noise of everyday life fades away and you’re surrounded by birdsong, greenery and calm. The park is home to a variety of birds, each adding its own personality and color to the atmosphere. Small paths lead you through the area, past enclosures, trees and benches where you can sit down and simply enjoy the moment. It’s a place where nature feels close, even though you’re only a few steps from shops, cafés and the rest of the town center. Families love the park because it’s safe, cozy and educational. Children can get close to the birds and learn about nature in a gentle, hands‑on way. Adults appreciate the peaceful environment — a perfect spot to take a break, breathe and enjoy a bit of quiet time. What makes the Nærbø Bird Park truly special is how it blends nature, community and accessibility. It’s a reminder that even in busy everyday life, there are small pockets of calm waiting to be discovered. For many, it’s a place to relax, reconnect with nature and enjoy a moment of peace. Join me as I travel across Norway’s mountains, fjords, forests, and remote valleys — living full‑time in my camper van while discovering hidden trails, abandoned mines, forgotten industrial sites, and untouched nature. 🌿 The Story of Nærbø Park — From Marshland to a Living Oasis In the early 1900s, few believed that a park could ever exist on the wet, barren land outside Nærbø. But Randulf Aadnesen (1894–1989) saw potential where others saw only mud. He bought the area from Hå Municipality for just 50 kroner per mål — a large marsh with no trees and no water. While the municipality planned to build houses there, Randulf dreamed of creating a green sanctuary for people and wildlife. In 1937, with help from local teachers and students, Randulf planted the first trees — saplings donated by the forestry company. Those trees still stand today, more than 65 years old, forming the heart of the park’s lush landscape. Before World War II, work began to dig out a pond using only shovels and wheelbarrows. It was hard, costly work, and had to stop when the war broke out. During the war, fuel was scarce, so the community turned to mechanical peat cutting. For four years, they worked the land, providing fuel for locals and income for the park. When the peat was gone, the edges of the old marsh were lined with stone — and a small pond appeared, giving birds a home and the park its soul. Just inside the main gate lies an ancient burial mound. During the war, German soldiers dug it up and placed a cannon there — a reminder of how history and nature intertwine in this place. Over time, the park became home to swans, peacocks, ducks, hens, and geese, along with wild birds that found refuge in its calm waters. Fish once lived in the pond too, though they disappeared as the ecosystem changed. Since 1977, Hå Municipality has maintained the park, continuing Randulf’s vision of cultivation and care. Randulf himself was seen in the park every day until his passing in 1989, at the age of 94. His dedication turned a lifeless marsh into a living, breathing oasis — a place of peace, beauty, and community. Today, Nærbø Park stands as a green heart in the center of Nærbø, visited year‑round by locals and travelers from across Rogaland. It’s a testament to one man’s belief that even the most unlikely places can bloom. 🔔 If you want more adventures from Norway, feel free to subscribe. 📍 Location: Nærbø, Norway 🎄 Season: Spring 🎥 Video type: Bird Park Walking This channel is all about vanlife in Norway, hiking adventures, wild camping, and exploring historic places most people never see.
