Qilin, the Unicorn of Chinese

Over 2,500 years ago, according to legend, a Qilin (Chinese Unicorn) 🦄 appeared before a mother and delivered a jade scroll from heaven 📜✨ that foretold her baby would be a king without a throne. That baby was Confucius, the great sage and teacher whose wisdom still guides people today. In Chinese culture, the Qilin is a symbol of fortune, peace, and prosperity 🍀🕊️, and it is deeply respected as a sacred creature believed to reside in the heavenly palace of the gods 🏯🌌. This unicorn dance is performed by Persatuan Tarian Singa Nosoob Baru Penampang (沙巴 新诺舞狮协会). 🔹🔹🔹 Qilin Dance & the Hakka Connection 🔹🔹🔹 The Qilin dance originated in the Hakka community more than a thousand years ago and is recognised as an official cultural heritage of China 🇨🇳. Due to the strong Hakka presence in Sabah, Qilin performances are widely seen during Chinese New Year 🏮🧨—which is uncommon in other parts of Malaysia. When the Hakka people migrated to Sabah (formerly North Borneo) 🌏, they brought along Qilin traditions while working as pioneering farmers and labourers. Back then, the loud music 🎶 of a Qilin performance was a sign of celebration—for weddings, newborns, or shop openings. Even today, the thunderous drums and vibrant dance continue to bring joy and blessings! 🔹🔹🔹 The Meaning Behind Qilin’s Design 🔹🔹🔹 The Qilin’s body features five colours 🎨, each representing the five elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) 🌬️🔥🌊🌿⛰️ in Chinese philosophy. It is said that the Qilin is intelligent and can read and understand written words 📖🧐. Despite its high-energy movements and intimidating dance, the Qilin remains humble, respectful, and gentle at heart ❤️. Unlike lion dance costumes, which sometimes adopt cute designs or funny acts, the Hakka Qilin maintains its traditional and dignified appearance—a reflection of its high status, almost akin to a deity. 🔹🔹🔹 The Mysterious Eye-Dotting Ritual 👁️✨ 🔹🔹🔹 The awakening (eye-dotting) ceremony of a new Qilin is a sacred event. Traditionally, it is performed at night, in quiet and remote places like forests 🌳🌙. Some believe that summoning the spirit of a Qilin into a new body releases a powerful aura ⚡, which may overwhelm those with weak energy.
