It stretches west from the bustling Gulou Square to Longpan Road beside the ancient Ming City Wall, with a total length of nearly 2,400 meters. Moderate in width, this thoroughfare encapsulates Nanjing’s millennial heritage, Republican-era charm, and gentle everyday warmth. Connected seamlessly with West Beijing Road to its west, it forms the most iconic east-west artery in central Nanjing, standing as a solemn yet poetic urban backbone cherished by local residents. The history of this road is deeply intertwined with the city. Back in the Guangxu reign of the late Qing Dynasty, the section from Gulou to Chengxian Street was Nanjing’s first modern road, constructed under the supervision of Zhang Zhidong and originally named Baotai Street. It went through several renamings during the Republic of China, once known as Huanghe Road and Beiping Road, bearing traces of changing eras. In 1959, the road was widened and extended eastward, officially adopting the name East Beijing Road. Since then, it has stood steadily, witnessing the passage of time in Jinling. Lined with dense plane trees all along, the road is sheltered by a lush green canopy in spring and summer, casting dappled light and shadow. In autumn and winter, golden leaves carpet the ground, presenting unique romance and serenity for every season. Every step along East Beijing Road unfolds a story. At its western end, Gulou Square serves as Nanjing’s vital transport hub and spiritual landmark. Traffic flows endlessly around the roundabout, while the ancient Gulou Tower stands timelessly, blending past and present in perfect harmony. Further east lies the former site of National Central University, today’s Sipailou Campus of Southeast University. Neatly arranged Republican-era buildings with red brick walls and grey tiled roofs line the straight plane tree avenue, where scholarly aura and historical depth linger in the air. The constant presence of students infuses the old street with everlasting youthful vitality. In the middle section stands the stately Nanjing Municipal Government, formerly the Examination Yuan of the Nationalist government. Surrounded by lush foliage, its classical Republican architecture features elegant upturned eaves, exuding dignity and restraint, softened by the surrounding greenery. A short distance away is the renowned Jiming Temple, where curling incense and distant chants create a tranquil Zen atmosphere. Each spring, the cherry blossom corridor outside the temple blooms in snow-white pink petals, drifting gently against the temple’s yellow walls and cyan tiles. This iconic spring scenery draws crowds of visitors and endows the street with delicate tenderness.
