Donkeys are on average 1 meter tall, from the ground to the shoulders, but the size and shape of the different breeds vary greatly. Animal colors range from white to gray and black. They usually have a dark band from the mane to the tail and the other band along the shoulders. The mane is short and pointed, and only the tip of the tail has long hair. Very long ears are black at base and tip. Donkeys can carry heavy loads over rough terrain and can withstand rough mountain terrain better than horses.
