A viral map titled “The Natural Borders of Bengal”, shared by Sharif Osman Hadi, has reopened sensitive debates about India’s eastern borders. The map shows West Bengal, Assam, the Northeast, and even parts of Myanmar merged into Bangladesh. This is not a new idea. Its roots lie in colonial-era decisions such as the 1905 Partition of Bengal, the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946, and proposals like the United Bengal Plan. Under the Cabinet Mission, Assam was grouped with Bengal, creating a real political risk of separation — a concern later highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Assam’s eventual inclusion in India was secured through resistance led by Gopinath Bordoloi, with support from Mahatma Gandhi.
