Alison and Peter Smithson - The Space Between
Evening Lecture and Book Launch 27 November 2017 To celebrate the launch of ‘The Space Between’ by Alison and Peter Smithson (Walther König, November 2016) this roundtable discussion brings together the editor, Max Risselada, as well as a number of scholars and designers who, through their work, have had the chance of studying the Smithsons’ work in depth. ‘The Space Between’ is the third part of the intended collected works of Alison and Peter Smithson and complementary to the volumes ‘The Charged Void: Architecture’ and ‘The Charged Void: Urbanism’. While the ‘Charged Void’ books deal with the celebrated architects’ built and unbuilt projects, ‘The Space Between’ can be considered as a summary of the Smithsons’ thinking as architects since the beginning of their career. This volume — richly illustrated with drawings and photographs by the Smithsons themselves — attempts to grasp the identity of places by observations of daily life, developing what they liked to call ‘a sensibility of place’.
