The Beginning of the King’s Ifá Festival (Ìlà Ìgbé) The King’s Ifá Festival, known as Ìlà Ìgbé, begins with the initial preparations that signify purification, reverence, and readiness for the sacred celebration. One of the first activities is the clearing of the bushes and pathways leading to the sacred grove or forest, the holy place where major spiritual rites and ceremonies are performed. This exercise symbolizes the removal of both physical and spiritual obstacles, ensuring that the sacred environment is clean, accessible, and worthy of receiving Ọ̀rúnmìlà’s blessings. Following the clearing of the sacred grove, the Babaláwos consult Ifá to seek divine guidance from Ọ̀rúnmìlà and Olódùmarè concerning the festival. Through divination, Ifá reveals the necessary prayers, sacrifices (ẹbọ), rituals, and spiritual instructions required for a peaceful and successful celebration, as well as for the protection, prosperity, and well-being of the king, the kingdom, and its people. After the consultation, purification rites are performed, sacred prayers are offered, and the king, chiefs, priests, and devotees officially declare the festival open. This marks the commencement of days of spiritual observances, traditional rites, cultural displays, music, dance, and communal celebrations dedicated to honoring Ọ̀rúnmìlà, preserving the sacred heritage of Ifá, and praying for peace, unity, progress, and abundant blessings for the entire kingdom.
