Before the Cabin Metal Roof Goes On... This Has to Be Perfect

Building a 100-year off-grid cabin means getting the roof details right—and today we're tackling the hidden work that most people never see. We're building our dream off-grid cabin deep in the boreal forest of northern Canada, accessible only by river in the summer and snowmobile in the winter. Every board, every sheet of plywood, every piece of insulation, every tool, and every metal roof panel has to be hauled into the wilderness before construction can even begin. In this episode, we focus on the hidden details that will help this cabin stand the test of time. Before the green corrugated metal roof can be installed, we build the rafter tails, roof battens, eave boards, ventilation system, fascia, and the small engineering details that help the roof shed water, control moisture, and keep the structure dry for generations. These are the parts of a cabin roof that most people never see—but they're some of the most important. This project isn't about building the fastest cabin. It's about building a better one. Our goal is to create an off-grid cabin that will still be standing a hundred years from now, using thoughtful engineering, careful craftsmanship, and proven building practices. Along the way, we take a break from construction to celebrate two important family milestones, spend time with our kids, reclaim more of the property by mowing around the cabin site, and check our trail camera to see what wildlife has been visiting while we've been hard at work.
