How to Service a 66.2 Harken Winch on a Sailboat with Captain Stephen
Captain Stephen walks you through 5 easy steps to service a 66.2 Harken Winch on a sailboat. We have two 66.2 Harken Winches on board, and two 44 Harken Winches, and this how-to video will help you understand how to clean and service Harken Winches as well as any other brand. It's very important to service your winches yearly to keep them in ship shape. When they aren't serviced, they are liable to break, like our windless did last summer when we were anchoring in Newport Harbour during a thunderstorm. So let's get started. First, you will want to gather all your tools and the parts diagram for your specific winch. This includes a degreaser; or a polar-base solvent like acetone; winch grease, Pawl oil, a small brush to work the grease into the bearings (a toothbrush works well), screwdrivers, and alan wrenches. You will also want a work surface, rags, buckets, safety goggles, and gloves. I did the work right on the seats in my boat's cockpit. If you are doing this be sure to cover the gelcoat or surface so you don't scratch it or get oil on it. PROTIP: Acetone is a great solvent for cleaning up the gelcoat. 5 Easy Steps to Servicing a 66.2 Harken Winch. 1. Disassemble the Winch. Carefully disassemble the winch, putting each part in buckets to keep them separated and secure from falling off the boat. Take time to look at each piece and part to see if there is any damage that needs to be addressed. 2. Clean the Parts Clean the parts with a degreaser, making sure to remove all of the gunk and build up on every part. Use your safety glasses and gloves during this step as the acetone in the degreaser is very dangerous and will absorb into your skin, along with the gunk you are removing from the parts. Acetone can also dissolve your eyeball if some gets splashed into it. 3. Grease the rod bearings Grease the rod bearings and all the parts so they can easily move against each other without sticking or jamming up. Don't be stingy with the grease. Put enough on so the parts are well coated because they will be subjected to the harsh elements (salt!). 4. Oil the Pawls and springs Put oil on the Pawls so they easily move. Make sure it's oil (and not grease) you are using because the grease will cause the pawls to stick and the winch will fail. 5. Reassemble the Winch Using the parts diagram, reassemble the winch the way it was. Always check to make sure the parts are moving easily as you go. If you have an extra part of two, it's ok you didn't need it anyway....just kidding. You must have missed a step. You need to start again, referring to your Winch diagram remove the parts, and reassemble it making sure you are putting it back together correctly. PROTIP: video each step of the process to use as a reference when reassembling the winch. And that's it! Happy Winch, Happy Life.
