Make ISO 12,800 Look Like ISO 400: My 2026 Lightroom Workflow

In this video, I’ll show you my current Lightroom noise reduction workflow for high ISO wildlife photography here in 2026. Lightroom Denoise has changed the way I process noisy wildlife photos, but getting clean results is about more than just clicking the Denoise button and hoping for the best. I’ll walk you through how I use Lightroom AI Denoise on high ISO wildlife images while preserving important fur detail, feather detail, texture, and sharpness. We’ll look at why sharpness and filling the frame matter so much in the field, why heavily cropped high ISO photos often fall apart, and how to avoid turning your wildlife images into soft, plastic-looking mush. I’ll also cover several common Lightroom Denoise questions, including whether you need to denoise before editing, whether sharpening affects the Denoise result, whether you should crop before or after noise reduction, and why I usually denoise before using masks or Generative AI Remove. Then we’ll jump into the actual Lightroom workflow, including: How I prepare the file before using Lightroom Denoise How I use sharpening masking to avoid sharpening background noise How I choose the right Lightroom Denoise amount How I clean up noisy backgrounds with masks How I protect fine fur and feather detail How I selectively brush in extra noise reduction when needed How to avoid over-smoothing wildlife photos If you photograph birds, mammals, or other wildlife at high ISO settings like ISO 3200, ISO 6400, ISO 10,000, ISO 12,800, or higher, this Lightroom noise reduction workflow should help you get cleaner files while keeping the detail that makes the image look real. This is my updated Lightroom Denoise workflow for wildlife photography, including AI Denoise, sharpening, masking, background noise reduction, selective noise reduction, and high ISO editing tips for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom.
