In snowy regions, kei cars are popular because they're easy to use, and 4WDs are recommended for their advantages on snowy roads. However, in winter, studless tires and wheels cost between 60,000 and 120,000 yen (40,000 to 80,000 yen, corrected in September), and you'll also need snow wipers and warm-up fuel to melt the snow and ice. So when buying a new car, you can often wonder whether you need a turbo or not. Having driven a non-turbo 4WD Wagon R in snowy regions for 14 years, I decided to buy a non-turbo 4WD Hustler Tough Wild. With this model's specifications, a turbo would cost an additional 78,100 yen. If you apply the turbo's cost to winter tires, snow wipers, warm-up fuel, a remote starter for when the car freezes, etc., I think that's about right. Furthermore, the actual fuel economy of a 4WD vehicle for normal driving (mainly on regular roads) in the summer is expected to be just 15.6 km/L with a turbo, and this is expected to drop even further in the winter, even if it's a hybrid. However, in terms of driving, such as stress-free acceleration, a turbo is definitely the winner. This video was made in a snowy region with a 4WD vehicle to clear up any confusion about turbos. To test this, we climbed up to the fifth station of Mount Chokai, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, straddling Akita and Yamagata prefectures, along the spectacular Chokai Blue Line. We wanted to see if a 150kg person could maintain a speed of 60km/h on this steep climb, and how stressful it would be to keep their foot on the accelerator all the way.
