Wellston, Oklahoma: The Route 66 Town That Fought to Stay on the Map
Wellston, Oklahoma may be a small town, but it has a big Route 66 story. In this ride, we roll through Wellston and look at the town’s connection to old Route 66, including the famous “Loop and Gap” story, the historic Captain Creek Bridge, the downtown mural area, and the new giant Route 66 push pin. For me, this one is personal. I live in rural Wellston, in Lincoln County, so this is not just another stop on the Mother Road. This is home turf. Wellston’s Route 66 story is about more than old pavement. It is about a town that nearly got bypassed, a road that shifted traffic away, and a small Oklahoma community that is still finding ways to remind travelers to slow down and stop. From the bridge to the murals to the new push pin landmark, Wellston is proof that some Route 66 stories are still being written. Thanks for riding along. Keep the rubber side down, ride safe, and keep chasing the story.
