Everything seemed real, everything seemed authentic, everything seemed alive, and in a way, it was, because the emotions were real, the reactions were real, the involvement was real. The only thing that wasn't real was reality itself, but no one seemed to notice, and who cares if it feels good? Today we're talking about Ferrari and how Maranello has just produced its own version of the Truman Show on four wheels. The Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale is a special series of 1,499 units that brings back, after a fourteen-year absence, the gear lever, the gate, and the clutch pedal. Everything an enthusiast dreams of in a real Ferrari. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 is there, real, with its 819 hp and 9,500 rpm, and it costs €590,000, about €200,000 more than the standard version. Everything feels authentic, everything feels real. Too bad the gearbox… isn't. Under the lever, under the gate, under the clutch pedal, there's no mechanical connection to the engine. There's an electronic system called "Manual-by-Wire" that transforms the physical gesture into a digital signal, just like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N does with its fake gearbox and the Ioniq 6 with its fake engine sound. Ferrari itself, just a year ago, responded to those asking for a manual transmission with a memorable phrase: "Buy yourself a vintage Ferrari." Evidently, someone has changed their minds, or, worse, someone saw how much 1,499 customers were willing to spend on a sensation simulator. Nothing you see is fake. It's simply controlled.
