When the Authorities Sold Out the Roma: The Crime in Arapova Dolina, Leskovac 1941 On December 11, 1941, at a site known as Arapova Dolina, on the Hisar hill in the Serbian city of Leskovac, German occupying forces carried out a mass execution of civilians. A total of 293 Roma, six Jews, and 11 Serbs were murdered. The documentary film “Arapova Dolina – December 11, 1941” presents a powerful and disturbing account of this crime, based on archival documents, original police records, historical photographs, and contemporary footage of the execution site. The film reveals how the local quisling authorities, in cooperation with the German occupiers, actively participated in the selection of the victims. Archival evidence shows that Roma civilians were deliberately proposed as substitutes for wealthy local merchants originally targeted for reprisal executions. A key segment of the film focuses on the official list of those executed, compiled by the Leskovac police and sent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Belgrade — a document that stands today as undeniable proof of systematic persecution and civilian targeting. The documentary also highlights the fate of young football players from the Roma club “Gajret”, the predecessor of today’s FK Veternica, whose members were among those executed.
