A Late Start to University? – Apprenticeship, marriage, children, divorce, and then what? When Yvonne, a trained florist, tried to return to work in her early forties, she struggled for a long time, hopping from one part-time job to the next. Her friend Meike watched with concern and advised Yvonne to train as a domestic manager to improve her job prospects. Yvonne followed her friend's advice, and so successfully that she even earned her master's certificate. During this time, she occasionally worked with children's groups and discovered how much she enjoyed it. However, she lacked a university degree for regular work as an educator. As a teenager, Yvonne had never dared to study or work in an office because she believed she wasn't good enough. But her employer, her colleagues, her new partner, and her friend Meike all encouraged her, and so Yvonne dared to take on this hurdle as well and mastered it with flying colors: At 51, she held her bachelor's degree in her hands.
