The 1961 Lincoln That Terrified Cadillac By Doing Less
The 1961 Lincoln Continental didn't get bigger, it got quieter, and it terrified Cadillac in the process. By 1958, Ford was in freefall. The Edsel had flopped, the recession gutted sales, and Lincoln was facing its third near-death experience in a decade. The man deciding its fate, Robert McNamara, didn't believe in luxury or style at all, and nearly killed the brand outright. Instead, his obsession with restraint created the formula Lincoln needed. A rejected Thunderbird design became a four-door sedan, built on a nine-year cycle nobody in Detroit thought would work. The result had no fins, no chrome excess, and suicide doors that became a design icon, while Cadillac kept chasing a look already going out of style.
