If you know someone who would like to share their story with us, send us an email at: [email protected] Our today's interviewee: Elżbieta Sobczyńska (born 1934), during the Warsaw Uprising she was arrested by the Germans along with her mother and brother, and deported to KL Auschwitz. Having arrived in the camp at night, they were subjected to disinfection and shaved. Women were humiliated by having to strip naked. The 10-year-old Elżbieta Sobczyńska had beautiful braids, so she became hysterical when it was her turn to have her head shaved. A German soldier appeared at the scene and let the girl keep her braids – most likely to defuse the situation. Elżbieta was separated from her mother and brother, they could only see each other from time to time. One of Elżbieta’s traumatic experiences was visiting mother in the Revier [camp hospital] – in order to get there, she had to walk past piles of corpses with rats running on top of them. Despite being only 10 years old, Elżbieta had to very quickly grow up and realize that she must take care of herself on her own, as her mother was unable to help her in these tragic circumstances.
