Welcome to our Love Free Range Eggs video which is designed to promote all that's great about free range eggs . David Preece, the poultry manager at the Benham Estate near Newbury in Berkshire, is starring in the short film with a supporting cast of 2,000 free range hens who lay for Waitrose. The video has been commissioned by the Love Free Range Eggs campaign with support from the British Free Range Egg Producers Association. It focuses on why producers chose to operate a free range system and demonstrates how birds display their natural behaviour when they are allowed the freedom to range in and out of the house at will. The term free range means that the birds have the choice to go outside during daylight hours. They return to the house to eat, drink and lay their egg every day in nesting boxes. There are different forms of housing available for the hens – in this example we have David Preece’s flat deck system, which is smaller than a lot of other hen houses you will find one farms across the UK.
