Mr. Kim Kyung-jin, renowned in Haenam as a "fit" farmer. After sweating it out farming all summer, he embarked on a special "body-boosting" trip to welcome autumn. The destination he chose was none other than an "island"?! Manjido, an island reachable in just 15 minutes by boat from Yeonmyeong Port in Tongyeong. It is said to be an emerging popular travel destination for foodie travelers who love to eat, because you can enjoy abundant and fresh seafood to your heart's content at reasonable prices. As soon as we arrived on the island and unpacked at our accommodation, the guesthouse owner served us our ‘first meal’ on Manjido: a spread of bibimbap generously topped with fresh sea squirts caught off the coast of Tongyeong. The island trip signaled a delightful start, thanks to the refined culinary skills of the owner, who previously worked as a Japanese cuisine chef. Manjido is the perfect destination for island enthusiasts, as crossing the suspension bridge allows you to travel to another island, ‘Yeondaedo.’ Yeondaedo, home to about 80 residents, is an ‘Eco Island’ that utilizes natural energy, such as solar power, without using any fossil fuels. The Jiget-gil trail connecting Manjido and Yeondaedo is a course where you can fully enjoy both the island and the sea. On top of that, there is even a free boat tour led by the village head, a native of the island. Although the island is small, it is full of things to see, so there is never a dull moment. The highlight of the subsequent three meals a day is the seafood feast for dinner. The 18-course meal, prepared with seasonal seafood harvested from the waters of Tongyeong, feels fresh and invigorated just by looking at it.
