In 1987, on New Zealand's Banks Peninsula, the Maurice White Native Forest Trust handed botanist Hugh Wilson the keys to 109 hectares of dead farmland laced with gorse. He did the opposite of what neighbours begged him to do: he let the gorse grow. Thirty-plus years later, that 109 ha has become part of a 1,420 ha native forest — restored with zero planting, almost zero herbicide, and one stubborn rule: minimal interference.
