Band Leadership: Leading your peers successfully

In this video I answer a question I received from a sophomore entering her first official leadership role. Here's here email . . . Hi Mr. Huff, I will be a sophomore this school year and I have been chosen as the woodwind captain and the flute section leader. I came in as a freshman last year and within a month I was the Head librarian (through an odd series of events) I also have had the opportunity to be my band directors assistant. I have been given a ton of opportunities as a freshman and I am extremely grateful. The woodwind section will be very large this coming year and I'm nervous about being “over” my friends and upperclassmen. I know all of the current woodwinds and I'm concerned they won’t take me seriously. My band director told me that as a freshman, people already followed me even though I didn’t have a title. I am nervous that I won't live up to all the expectations. Thanks to my parents I have always been held to higher expectations, like integrity, responsibility and honesty. My parents taught me how to be respectful to adults and to my peers, along with how to have a strong character. I’m not nervous about the character side of being in leadership, more the practical. I need some practical tips for how I will present myself at band camp to all the freshman. Any Ideas?
