His boat, "Rêve bleu," a 7.20 m wooden dinghy built in 1974 at the Querrien shipyards in Concarneau, is moored at the coastal pontoon inside the port. "Rêve bleu" is powered by a 120 hp Volvo engine. The boat is equipped with an autopilot, radar, depth sounder, VHF, GPS, and a video plotter. The autopilot, as its name suggests, allows the boat to set and maintain its course without human intervention. However, a simple maneuver can instantly disengage it. GPS, short for Global Positioning System, is a satellite-based navigation device. Its precision allows it to display, track, and memorize headings and routes remarkably well. Coupled with GPS, the video plotter is an electronic nautical chart capable of recording, cataloging, and reproducing a very large amount of information. VHF, or Very High Frequency, allows sailors to communicate with each other. Permanently connected, it has a safety channel, channel 16, whose use is strictly reserved for SOS or emergencies. The other channels are free. Jean-Claude, for example, communicates on channel 14. Artisanal conger fishing is a difficult and dangerous activity, requiring great physical stamina. It is practiced in winter near the coast and offshore during the summer months. -The sailors use longlines, 800 meters long, 150 gauge nylon lines fitted with 150 size 8.0 hooks (read: eight zeros) spaced 4 meters apart. 600g weights spaced every 6 hooks stabilize the longline in the water. -The bait (or bait) used, fresh or frozen, is mackerel, horse mackerel, sand lance, or sardine.
