In a conversation with Tomasz Słomczyński, the man confesses that he doesn't know why he decided to take his own life, and then begins to talk about his childhood: his parents' alcoholism, beatings, suppression, shame, and molestation. "I wanted to fall asleep and not wake up. Do you think those were suicidal thoughts?" he asks, recalling one of the many traumatic scenes from his childhood. He also admits that he drinks, although, as he adds, "alcohol isn't his biggest problem." In a conversation with Tomasz Słomczyński, Professor Adam Czabański, sociologist and president of the Polish Suicidology Association, addressed Maciek's situation, which is common to other men. "It's difficult for people in crisis to connect the dots," he said. Paweł Siłakowski, an addiction therapist, was the next guest. The program's consultant is suicidologist Dr. Halszka Witkowska. "Niepokochani" is a five-part audio series by Tomasz Słomczyński and Piotr Szymanek dedicated to men in mental crisis. Each episode tells the true story of an anonymous protagonist – a patient in a psychiatric hospital. The protagonists are anonymous, but their stories and experiences are real. The audio drama is followed by a conversation with an expert who helps understand the mechanisms of crisis, debunks myths, and indicates where to seek help. In the first episode, Tomasz Słomczyński talks with Professor Adam Czabański, sociologist, president of the Polish Suicidology Society, and Paweł Siłakowski, therapist. The series addresses a topic that is still too rarely discussed. According to police statistics from 2020–2024, an average of 13 people in Poland take their own lives every day. 11 of them are men. The series' creators want to show that silence surrounding a crisis deepens loneliness, while conversation and professional support can truly save lives. The program's mentor and consultant is Dr. Halszka Witkowska, a suicidologist. "False beliefs about suicide make it so difficult to help people in crisis. These beliefs feed on silence; it is in this silence that they are born and solidified," she says in one episode. The creators of "The Unloved" reference the so-called Papageno effect – a proven phenomenon in which responsible public speaking about a suicidal crisis can help those seeking support. Papageno, the protagonist of "The Magic Flute," decides to commit suicide due to the support he receives from friends. The opposite of the Werther effect is named after him – a statistical increase in suicide attempts that occurs after media coverage of a famous person's suicide. The name refers to Goethe's 18th-century novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther," whose publication was followed by a wave of suicides across Europe. "With our series, we want to show that a meaningful conversation about suicide can save lives. We want to make this clear to both those experiencing a crisis and those around them who sense something and want to help, but are paralyzed by fear and ignorance," adds Słomczyński. Need help?
