Gotanda in Tokyo was a high-class neighborhood home to daimyo residences in the Edo period and the mansions of notable people like Ito Hirobumi in the Meiji period. However, through the Taisho and Showa periods, it developed into a red-light district, and has become the entertainment district it is today for over 100 years, a unique neighborhood nestled next to an upscale residential area.
