Following the unveiling of a design prototype in August 2020, the production version of the Triumph Trident 660 has finally arrived. Many are probably wondering why this is the case, given that Triumph's mid-size Street Triple series and its neo-classic Street Twin are the norm. As the name suggests, it's powered by a 660cc water-cooled in-line three-cylinder engine. However, while the displacement is the same as the Street Triple S (the RS and R are 765cc), the bore and stroke are different. Specifically, the bore has been reduced by 2mm and the stroke extended by 2.6mm. This required the modification of 67 parts, demonstrating the company's commitment to the Trident. While maximum output is slightly lower at 81hp compared to the Street Triple S's 95.2hp, it delivers over 90% of its maximum torque over a wide range above 3600rpm, making it easy to imagine how easy it will be to ride in everyday conditions. And with a quickshifter available as an original accessory, it's sure to add plenty of sporty riding fun. The frame is not borrowed from the Street Triple series, but is a steel perimeter type. This is combined with Showa front and rear shocks and Nissin brake calipers. The styling of the actual bike is more dynamic than the impression given by photographs, and the concentration of mass is clearly conveyed visually. This British bike, which has been released in the highly competitive mid-class market at 979,000 yen, is sure to be one to watch this year.
