Dead Malls Season 7 Episode 2 - Mineral River Plaza

Next up on our round trip round trip of the northern US we’re off to Wisconsin, and the UP of Michigan, to see two of the most dreamy dead malls I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Each fantastic in its own way, the Cedar Mall and Mineral River Plaza were well worth the 20 hour trip. Cedar Mall and its intoxicating center court fountain with 6 bulbs was a nice visit, and a nice warm up but the real treat sat in a small mining town of a few hundred residents on the shores of Lake Superior.. Mineral River Plaza is easily one of the greatest dead malls I have ever seen. Still looking like a snapshot out of a 1970s postcard. This mall back in the day once served the small mining town of White Pine. But with the towns slow death, the mall has become more of a small community center with lots of empty space.. Mineral River Plaza today remains a golden example of the older style of the malls. A style NEVER seen in the modern day. At one point, it featured the red owl grocery store, as well as 15 stores, restaurants, and services. But as of my visit in 2024 was a silent, eerie and liminal look into a long gone era. Those big plastic globes still change colors all these years later, silently and infinitely cycling thru life, dimly but colorfully illuminating the beautiful old mall below.
