NOJA - Cantabria - Spain

Noja is a municipality in the autonomous community of Cantabria, Spain, located in the Trasmiera region. It borders the Cantabrian Sea to the north, Arnuero to the west and south, Argoños to the south, and Santoña to the east. It is 43 kilometers from Santander, the regional capital. The municipality is not organized into towns but into several neighborhoods, with the town hall located in the Palacio neighborhood. Its population was 2,587 in 2015. History From the 9th century until 1834, Noja belonged to the Junta de Siete Villas (Council of Seven Towns), one of the five councils that made up the Merindad of Trasmiera. A significant event in local history is that in 1644, Noja received the title of town from Philip IV, which granted it independence from the council and the authority to appoint its own mayors. Environment Regarding natural resources, the Santoña, Victoria, and Joyel Marshes, each located at opposite ends of the municipality, are a major attraction as a nature reserve and, of course, for birds, which also stop in the Santoña Marshes during their migrations.
