STERILISATION : Steriliser une chienne, castrer un chien...Attention danger ! Esprit Dog
Spaying a female dog or neutering a dog: things you need to know: When you have a female dog, you quickly wonder whether or not to spay her. Generally, spaying is recommended, particularly to prevent the appearance of certain tumors, but beware: in recent years, more and more studies have shown that this operation promotes the appearance of other tumors that had disappeared. If you've done a little research on the subject, you've probably already read that spaying a female dog before her first heat can prevent 99.5% of the risk of mammary tumors. This is true, BUT as mentioned above, new studies also prove that spaying causes certain tumors that were previously invisible to the eye to "return." A very recent study on Rottweilers suggests that spaying before the first heat would push bone cancer to third or fourth place. In reality, the truth today is that we have very little experience with spaying before or after the first heat. However, you should know that a mammary tumor can be operated on and treated in most cases, which is not true for bone cancer. If your dog develops one, there is very little chance she will survive. Note that once your dog has had her third heat, if you choose to spay her to prevent mammary tumors, know that it will be useless. When we talk about spaying, we also generally talk about weight gain: be careful, this is a shortcut!! The principle is simple: by spaying, you're actually removing an organ, so your dog's body will need less energy to function. Logically, if she eats exactly the same food as before, she'll inevitably gain weight! The ideal is to allow her to exercise a little more, because remember that a spayed dog isn't sick at all! Obviously, we're not telling you to let her run right after her surgery, but once she's recovered and the vet has given the green light, she should resume regular physical activity! Indeed, if she's expending enough energy, you'll see that there's no reason for her to gain weight. To prevent her from gaining weight, you can also reduce her kibble intake slightly (about 10%). Also, be careful when talking about kibble: kibble designed for spayed dogs is often of poor quality. Why? Simply because they are loaded with soluble fiber that swells in the stomach, making you feel full, but they are also lower in animal protein and higher in grains (because of the fiber). Also, be careful if your dog is large (over 40 kg), because following neutering, she has a 20% chance of becoming incontinent. This problem, linked to the operation, can occur up to 5 years after neutering, which is why owners often don't make the connection and think either that their dog is no longer housebroken or that she's causing them. There are, of course, treatments to combat incontinence, but your dog also risks experiencing certain serious side effects, such as the development of certain cancers. Regarding males, many are convinced that neutering a dog reduces its aggression because it produces less testosterone. This is both true and false. Indeed, if your dog's aggression isn't hormonal, neutering won't change anything. It's worth noting that aggression is very rarely hormonal. In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages to neutering. We simply advise you to be pragmatic: if you have an intact male at home and you adopt a female but don't want litters: neuter! Even without a male at home, if you're afraid of an unwanted pregnancy and want to avoid the disadvantages of being in heat: neuter! It's actually a matter of common sense, depending on the dog's environment and your lifestyle. Subscribe to our YouTube channel!
