The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) | TAKE 55: Sound "Watch out, the world's behind you"

Few debut albums arrive with a reputation as large as The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). Featuring Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker and Nico, the album emerged from Andy Warhol's Factory scene in New York and brought together influences from folk music, free jazz, experimental composition, pop art and rock and roll. The result was unlike anything else being made at the time. In this episode of TAKE 55: Sound, I revisit a record that continues to cast a long shadow across popular music, and consider why it still feels so immediate nearly sixty years later. TAKE 55: Sound is the sister channel to TAKE 55, where I talk about cinema. Here I focus on records from my collection through feeling, memory and theme rather than straight reviews.
