Michel-Ange — Le génie torturé qui a sculpté l'éternité dans le marbre! | documentaire!
In this biographical documentary, we trace the complete life of Michelangelo Buonarroti—sculptor, painter, architect, and poet—from his childhood in the marble quarries of Settignano to his death in Rome at the age of eighty-eight, chisel in hand, before an unfinished Pietà. Far from the idealized legend that reduces Michelangelo to a serene and inspired genius, this documentary portrait explores the complexity of a profoundly human man: proud and insecure, capable of tenderness and violence, haunted by perfection and tormented by incompleteness. Through ten chapters, each a window onto his era and inner world, we examine his major works—the Vatican Pietà, David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Last Judgment, the tomb of Julius II, the Medici New Sacristy, and St. Peter's Dome—not as static monuments, but as traces of a constant struggle between a man and the very materials he sought to subdue. We also explore the lesser-known aspects of his life: the forgery of the antique Cupid that opened the doors of Rome to him, the clandestine dissections in Florentine convents, his escape during the Siege of Florence and his refuge in a secret chamber beneath San Lorenzo, the poems addressed to Vittoria Colonna and Tomaso de Cavalieri, the censorship of the Last Judgment after the Council of Trent, and the deliberate destruction of thousands of drawings and notebooks shortly before his death. This documentary follows in the tradition of serious historical biography, based on contemporary sources about the artist—notably the accounts of Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi—and enriched by a reflection on the political, religious, and artistic context of the Italian Renaissance. It is intended for all those who wish to understand not only what Michelangelo created, but why he created it, under what conditions, and at what human cost.
