Hoy os traigo una tarta que, a pesar de ser algo laboriosa, reconozco que merece la pena cada minuto invertido en ella. La Torta Martha Rocha es una de las más famosas de la región sur y sureste de Brasil, fue inspirada por una mujer quién dio nombre a esta joya gastronómica. A los 18 años, María Martha Hacker Rocha participó en el concurso de Miss Bahía donde ganó y, poco después, se convirtió en Miss Brasil. En julio de 1954, Martha llegó a Estados Unidos y las encuestas ya la consideraban electa Miss Universo. Martha quedó en segundo lugar y cuenta la leyenda que perder el título de Miss Universo ante la estadounidense Miriam Stevenson se debió a dos centímetros de más en sus caderas. Sin embargo, se dice que la historia de esos dos cm fue una invención del periodista João Martins, de la Revista “O Cruzeiro”, para consolar a los brasileños que tenían grandes expectativas de que ganara el título. Martha Rocha era una mujer de rasgos muy atractivos, de tez blanca, ojos azules y cabello rizado. Fue doña Dair, pastelera de Curitiba, quien se inspiró en su imagen para crear uno de los mayores éxitos gastronómicos de la pastelería brasileña: la Tarta Martha Rocha. Esta tarta se compone de varias capas de relleno; bizcocho de vainilla y chocolate, crema de yema (baba de moça), crujiente de nueces, crema de albaricoque o ciruela, y una cubierta de nata montada y huevo hilado. Pero entre estas capas hay una que tiene un significado especial: un disco de merengue que aporta mayor altura a la tarta a diferencia de otros pasteles. Este disco de merengue representa los dos centímetros extra por los que Miss Brasil no ganó el certamen de Miss Universo en Estados Unidos ese año. But among these layers there is one that has a special meaning: a meringue disk that gives the cake a greater height than other cakes. This meringue disk represents the two extra centimeters that Miss Brazil did not win the Miss Universe pageant in the United States that year.
