In the summer of 2017, her mother discovered a bald spot on her head, and shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with alopecia areata, also known as circular hair loss. Within a year, Deborah lost almost all of her hair. Despite various treatment attempts, the hoped-for success failed to materialize. Only a new treatment with so-called JAK inhibitors at the University Hospital of Basel brought about a change: Her hair began to grow back, and with it, a sense of joy in life returned.
