U-96 was a Type VIIC U-boat commissioned in September 1940 under Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, and she carried a small grinning sawfish painted on her conning tower that became one of the most photographed pieces of art in the U-boat fleet. Lehmann-Willenbrock was already a Knight's Cross holder when the Kriegsmarine assigned a propaganda war correspondent named Lothar-Günther Buchheim to sail with him on the seventh patrol in late 1941. That patrol included the brutal Battle of the Atlantic in winter weather, a near-fatal depth-charging in the Strait of Gibraltar, and the long limp home into a damaged Saint-Nazaire. Buchheim survived it, sat on his notes for thirty years, and finally published the novel "Das Boot" in 1973. Wolfgang Petersen filmed it in 1981. U-96 herself sank around 27 ships in eleven patrols and was destroyed in port at Wilhelmshaven by American bombers in March 1945.
