Failing Transom on Alumacraft 1436 Jon Boat: Transom Plate 1of3
This is a 2016 Alumacraft 1436 LT riveted jon boat. I have a 13hp Predator engine with a Swamp Runner Medium Kit (longtail mud motor). I bought the boat new. I either wanted this boat, which was more expensive, had a 5 year warranty, and was a 2 hour trip away; or get a 1436 Tracker that was cheaper, 3 year warranty, and 10 minutes away. Should have gone with the Tracker because I found out, after a very long email discussion, that Alumacraft said "In making a modification to the boat that has compromised the structural integrity of the boat, and by installing a motor on the boat, that the boat was not designed or intended to have installed on it, yes you are voiding the warranty." So this will be my cataloged experience with fixing the transom on my jon boat, and I hope to help others out-there that are looking for some ideas. My transom was starting to bubble down low where there were no rivets or supports to help support the transom. With the Alumacraft, the transom support is off to the side and everything is done with rivets so you can not easily fix, or repair anything. With a Tracker, the transom support is in the center and the transom uses bolts and nuts so you can maintenance it yourself with out too much work of removing rivets. The aluminum plate I got is T6 Aluminum (the T6 is the hardness of it) and it is .25" thick. I went with the biggest foot print I could get without removing any factory rivets. The more area covered, the better force distribution. I powder coated it to help protect the aluminum and make it look cool. It was also a test piece for practicing with powder coating. So I first taped the edges to help protect my hands against the sharp edges, drilled the mounting holes in it, put a bevel all the way around on one surface, sanded and bead blasted it, and powder coated it. I put a bevel on one surface, the surface I'm putting toward the boat transom, so that there will be a nice bead of M5200 all around the edge. This is part 1 of 3!
