Memory Text “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) The Promised Land seemed so far away to the Israelites, who were camped under the pillar of cloud on the plain. Moses ascended into the thick darkness that had covered the mountaintop many days earlier. Surely their leader had already died, they reasoned, if not from starvation, then from the fire that burned on the summit. The people at the foot of the mountain were restless and impatient, ready to move on to a land flowing with milk and honey. Although these same people had just days earlier made a solemn covenant with God, promising to obey Him, they wanted to see a visible image. So they gathered around Aaron’s tent and began demanding that he make an idol for them. Fearing for his own safety, Aaron agreed. Exodus chapters 32–34 tell us how events unfolded. This account is just one of many Bible stories that explore the theme of repentance and forgiveness. And that is what our lesson is about.
