The Metropolitan Intercity Railway's Tsukuba Express Line opened in August 2005. It connects Akihabara and Tsukuba over a distance of 58.3 km. The entire line is fully grade-separated, with no level crossings thanks to tunnels, viaducts, bridges, and other infrastructure. It boasts a top speed of 130 km/h. The train I rode was the Metropolitan Intercity Railway's new TX-3000 series. Modeled after the TX-2000 series, which has been in service since the line's opening, this AC/DC commuter train can also operate on AC electrified sections north of Moriya. Leaving the Tsukuba underground station, the TX-3000 series soon exited the Tsukuba Tunnel and traveled along the elevated and canal sections. Just before Moriya, the train switches over to AC/DC and the depot's entrance and exit lines join on the right. After passing Moriya and crossing the Tone River, the train enters Chiba Prefecture. At Nagareyama-Otakanomori, the train connects with the Tobu Railway Urban Park Line (Noda Line). As it approaches the city center, the line is lined with high-rise apartment buildings and passes through cityscapes that have developed alongside the Tsukuba Express Line. At Rokucho, the train enters Tokyo and crosses the Arakawa River to arrive at Kita-Senju. From here, you can enjoy a momentary, spectacular view of other lines running parallel and intersecting with each other, a sight only possible in the city center. Afterwards, the train passes through the Akihabara Tunnel and arrives at its final destination, Akihabara.
