Why Michael Jackson WASN'T In The Torture Music Video

At the start of 1984, the Jacksons would begin preparing for their national tour as well as release of their album Victory. Michael Jackson, at the height of his career due to the unprecedented success of the Thriller album and it's music videos, would appear on five of the album's songs. The most popular of the songs being State of Shock and Torture. The latter, co-written and produce by Jackie Jackson, featuring Michael and Jermaine Jackson who recently returned to the group. In anticipation of the song's release as a single, production would begin on the short film. The music video would be infamous for Michael Jackson not being present in the video and a wax figure being used in his place instead. Jermaine Jackson would also opt not to participate. Due to the absence of the group's lead singers, the video would not be mentioned amongst Michael's long filmography of short films and fade into obscurity. This video essay details the history of the Torture music video and reveals reasons behind Michael Jackson's absence and it's influence on his short films moving forward.
