NANDI-NDAITWAH CALLS FOR UN-LED WESTERN SAHARA SOLUTION - nbc
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says the United Nations should lead efforts to resolve the Western Sahara issue, calling on member states to contribute to lasting solutions. A long-time supporter of Sahrawi self-determination, Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia will continue to stand with justice and champion multilateralism, which has benefited Namibia. Speaking to Sahrawi Special Envoy Mohamed Yeslem Beisat at State House, the head of state stressed that cross-border concerns require dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and collective action to address the challenges facing the people of Western Sahara and other nations. President Nandi-Ndaitwah further noted that Namibia understands the value of the right to freedom, given its own long struggle for independence. "We believe that it should continue to help solve problems affecting different countries. Cross-border issues should be resolved through multilateral mechanisms. More specifically, whenever differences arise, we believe in dialogue as the best way to address them. That is why we strongly believe that the United Nations should play a central role in addressing and finding a solution to the issue of Western Sahara. Member states can make their contributions through the UN system." Accompanied by the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Angola, Hamdi El Khalil, Mohamed Yeslem Beisat delivered a message from the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, further expressing gratitude for Namibia's support and solidarity. “The letter and our debate were focusing on the latest development in the struggle of the Sahrawi people for freedom and self-determination but also on the regional and continental agenda in the framework of the African Union and United Nations process for peace in Western Sahara.” The Special Envoy also briefed President Nandi-Ndaitwah on the current situation in the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
